Lucas Santtana is a Brazilian singer, composer and producer. In his last CD, Sem Nostalgia (YB Music, 2009), he recreates the Brazilian guitar tradition, mixing up sounds from the 1950s, like João Gilberto and Dorival Caymmi, with mashups, samples and his own creations.
This young Brazilian guitarist and singer is keen to escape the long shadow of bossa nova – hence his debut's title – but Brazil's love affair with lilting rhythms and poetic lyrics is ingrained in even his most experimental creations. There are plenty of those here: sambas laced with samples and electronica, a reggae‑tinged instrumental, droll songs in English about muddy backyards and romantic mornings. Even the conventional acoustic strum and bossa croon of "Amor Em Jacuma" morphs into dub trickery halfway through. The numbers are short, the mood is restless, but Santtana's quirky, innovative approach makes for a seamless, refreshing excursion.
