Eddie Vedder - Into The Wild Soundtrack

Into the Wild is the first solo studio album by Pearl Jam vocalist Eddie Vedder, and is based on his contributions to the soundtrack for the film Into the Wild (2007).
The songs for the soundtrack were recorded in 2007 at Studio X in Seattle, Washington. Vedder worked with producer Adam Kasper, who had previously worked on Pearl Jam's 2002 album, Riot Act, and 2006 album, Pearl Jam. The album was mixed by Kasper and Vedder.
After viewing a rough cut of Into the Wild, Vedder quickly went to work writing songs for the film. The following day after watching the film, Vedder began working on material. After three days, Vedder gave Penn a range of material to work with. Penn placed into the film what Vedder had given him, and Vedder then went on to work on more material that Penn could add to the film. Vedder said that Penn "gave [him] a lot of freedom," and added that "the biggest thing was trust, which was just kind of unspoken." Vedder also said that having to write songs based on a narrative "simplified things." He said, "There were fewer choices. The story was there and the scenes were there." Vedder said that the songwriting process "grew" as Penn would ask him for more material.
Vedder described the recording process as a "factory." He said, "I'd just sit in the chair, and they'd hand me a fretless bass, and they'd hand me a mandolin, and they'd take a second to do the rough mix, and then I'd write the vocal, and it was just quick." On the recording sessions as a whole, Vedder stated, "It was like I kinda went into some weird space for a week or two, and then I woke up out of this daze, and it was done. I don't really remember it."

Jorge Ben - Samba Esquema Novo

Classic Album!
Ben's first full-length record, this 1963 release contains the hit singles "Mas Que Nada" and "Chove Chuva" and typifies the light yet propulsive rhythms that afforded Ben a decades-long career in Brazilian pop. Not yet pared down to the more rock- and Afro percussive-driven sound he eventually developed, Samba Esquema Novo (which translates to "New Style Samba") is replete with swirling bossa nova rhythms and soaring choruses. Its big-band-style accompaniment, nicely off-set by Ben's signature minor-tone guitar workings, propels the set into an upbeat and enjoyable listen.

Blundetto - Bad Bad Things

The first album by Radio Nova programmer (Paris hippest station), a hotpot of gently simmering soul-reggae spices with a few bubbles of emotion rising delicately to the surface. Featuring : Buddos Band, Shawn Lee, Lateef, Tommy Guerrero, Chicoman, General Electrics, Hindi Zarha.

Fanga - Sira Ba

For the last ten years or so, the collective Fanga has been on the up, blending Afrobeat, Jazz and Funk. An alliance of complementary personalities and cosmopolitan energies, Fanga first took form in 1998. Returning from Africa, Serge Amiano brings back a few vinyls of the likes of Fela, CS Crew and CK Mann that he plays to the Burkinabese rapper Korbo. Amiano being a hip-hop producer naturally takes on the role of the group’s artistic director right from the start.

The discovery of this urban African music of the 1970s quickly forms the basis of a shared passion. Fanga brings out its first six tracks in 2001, the group records “Afrokalyptik” in 2003, its first album. The following album “Natural Juice” comes out in 2007, warmly received and with much acclaim. Fanga is not only highly praised by Gilles Peterson but also the New York magazine Wax Poetics.

Despite being firmly rooted in certain Nigerian and Ghanean musical traditions (those of the 1970s’ afro-beat and high-life) Fanga is equally at home to musical concoction, as demonstrated by the samples and other hip-hop and electronic ingredients, not to mention the vocals in Dioula, English and French. The gritty horns and earthy analogue keyboards shape the group’s sound whilst Korbo has no hesitation in embracing his Mandingue roots.

Brought up on the raw energy of hip-hop, the group reposes equally on certain values that even today can only be found in Africa, a sort of candour and instinctive sense of rhythm which lends such freshness to Fanga. This urge to respond when faced with a base emotion, however fleeting, has governed their musical progression since the beginning of the 2000s.

These guys have a bit more grit in their grooves than most, still very much in the best 70s-inspired Afro Funk styles you’d expect, but with a nice edge in some of the rhythmic undercurrents, almost as if their new recordings were actually some lost indie label sets from years back!

Dave Matthews Band - Before These Crowded Streets

South African native Dave Matthews formed his band in Virginia in the early 1990s, gaining a large fan base with constant college tours. Although musically rooted in live performance, the band's acoustic rock is colored with jazz and world-music influences, making for a mix that's difficult to pin down.
The Dave Matthews Band moves its music forward by increments on Before These Crowded Streets. While the album offers more of the folkish melodies and vaguely internationalist rhythms that made this Charlottesville, Virginia, group a major record and concert draw, it also finds them adding new colorings to the mix. Alanis Morissette guests on two cuts, "Spoon" and the disc's first single, "Don't Drink the Water," and banjo whiz Bela Fleck sits in, too. More interesting, though, is the modernist string arrangement played by the Kronos Quartet on the driving "Halloween." Matthews's obvious hopes to lead something other than a jam band are at least partly fulfilled here; at the same time, Streets should keep his customers satisfied.

Marcos Valle - Previsao do Tempo

Almost everything that Marcos Valle has written or recorded is wonderful, but this is the real deal for brasil groove fans. On this 1973 release Marcos Valle is moving away from the familiar bossa sounds of the 60s towards a radical new interpretation of his brasilian sound. Valle was discovered just after high school when the bossa nova sound was at the height of it’s popularity, he was a fixture on the scene, with many Brazilian artists eager to record his songs. On “previsão do tempo” every bit is as warmly watery as the image of Marcos in a swimming pool on the cover. This warm and energetic mix of tunes fared well with the help of his backing band, who would later become Azymuth, the album was nothing short of innovative and Valle incorporates the textures and moods of European soundtracks and French pop. It has got plenty of nice layers of fender rhodes and moog synthetisers and all songs are killers. This is one of the best brasil records which are beyond bossa nova and samba, groovy as hell. It’s no wonder that the album was one of Valle’s last great recordings.

Guts - Le Bienheureux

If anyone is guilty of Guts’ addiction to music, his mother is to be blamed. Instead of turning her son into an overweight and diabetic child, she preferred to give him a new vinyl each week, for his good manners. Guts, as an exemplary child, always finishing his plate at the table, is, by 9, already sitting on a collection of records and becomes the number one DJ in his neighbourhood. Between two soccer games and really becoming addicted to sounds, he is asked by his mother to choose between studies and music. The choice of option 2 will disturb his nights! Le Bienheureux will work on scratches and sampling art. He goes to London to get pictured with Royal Guards or eat a jelly plate, then Guts discovered New York’s old school gastronomy (EPMD, KRS One and the Public Enemy caviar) But by looking too close at the Hip-Hop cauldron , he finally fell in and created the Alliance Ethnik in 1990. The first album will make him grow from a sandwicherie to a four stars restaurant! Guts is good but needed more practice to value his recipes. Bob Power (A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots) becomes his ‘Paul Bocuse’, the coach able to teach him to spice and keep his preparations edible! He gets his American guides recognition and De La Soul, Rahzel, Biz Markie and Common Sense are joining him at the table. Faster Jay is opening the Kif Record label and ‘Le Bienheureux’ becomes one of his’chefs’ and goes behind the ovens for French rappers like Passi, Big Red, Sages Poetes De La Rue, the Svinkels, Les Rieurs. Impossible to please, he travels to Senegal to learn about new recipes in Youssou N’Dour studios and works with some local ‘chefs’ in Jamaica (Anthony B, Michael Rose and Sacha) The actual MC’s generation didn’t know how to prepare toasts when Guts was using an ASR Ensoniq with one hand ! Now ‘four stars chef’, Guts Le Bienheureux is proposing his menu! Mainly inspired by his travels, a meal with the taste of Pete Rock, DJ Shadow, Dan The Automator, RJD2, DJ Premier, Jay-Dee, Danger Mouse, Wax Taylor only prepared on a MPC 4000! Bon appetit

Lucas Santtana - Sem Nostalgia

Lucas Santtana is a Brazilian singer, composer and producer. In his last CD, Sem Nostalgia (YB Music, 2009), he recreates the Brazilian guitar tradition, mixing up sounds from the 1950s, like João Gilberto and Dorival Caymmi, with mashups, samples and his own creations.
This young Brazilian guitarist and singer is keen to escape the long shadow of bossa nova – hence his debut's title – but Brazil's love affair with lilting rhythms and poetic lyrics is ingrained in even his most experimental creations. There are plenty of those here: sambas laced with samples and electronica, a reggae‑tinged instrumental, droll songs in English about muddy backyards and romantic mornings. Even the conventional acoustic strum and bossa croon of "Amor Em Jacuma" morphs into dub trickery halfway through. The numbers are short, the mood is restless, but Santtana's quirky, innovative approach makes for a seamless, refreshing excursion.

Wax Taylor - In The Mood For Life

Behind the cutting, spinning, guest artists and precision-oriented rhyming is where the french producer Jean-Christophe Le Saoût and his project Wax Tailor resides. In The Mood For Life combines what breakbeat hip-hop deserves to be remembered as and what Wax Tailor is constantly perfecting.
For fans of Nightmares on Wax, Avalanches, Thievery Corporation or even J5, Wax Tailor use time-tested rhyming techniques with instrumentally invigorating backdrops. On In The Mood For Life, supporting artists enable a change in tone and style. The list of artists includes: Charlotte Savary, Speech Defect, Sara Genn, Mattic, Dionne Charles, Voice and Ali Harter, ASM and Charlie Winston.
Thanks to the artists, the relaxing and sometimes animated atmosphere that Le Saoût has prepped corrals track to track in a harmonious fashion that averts negative attention from a possibly too-diverse expanse of songs. The album’s length helps it slip in and out of several non-compatible songs, yet it is through this time gap from these songs that allows for the transitions to appear fluid rather than blocky.
On the whole, In The Mood For Life mandates patience for anyone who isn’t familiar with any of the other groups mentioned above, but only asks a listen through for an attuned ear to really appreciate. Wax Tailor possess the hand every breakbeat artists desires and have bogarted the loot with such a quality assortment of accompanying musicians. This well executed album might be for you or it might not be, but whatever you do, do not call it rap.

The Lincoln Lawyer - Soundtrack

Mickey Haller (Matthew McConaughey) is a Los Angeles criminal defense attorney who operates out of the back of his Lincoln Continental sedan. Haller has spent most of his career defending garden-variety criminals, until he lands the case of a lifetime: defending a Beverly Hills playboy accused of murder. But the seemingly straightforward case suddenly develops into a deadly game of survival for Haller.
The soundtrack relies heavily on modern hip/hop, rap, pop, and soul. Opening up with Bobby "Blue" Bland’s smooth and soulful 1974 hit "Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City” and closing with '60s jazz singer Marlena Shaw’s “California Soul,” the latter of which is given a 21st century update by West Coast gangsta rapper Ya Boy, The Lincoln Lawyer offers up a solid mix of old and new school, with a little Pacific Ocean-kissed modern rock thrown in for good measure.
